Visiting Zurich with children.
We travelled to Zurich and spent time in around Zurich, also travelling to the tiny city of Vaduz on the train from Zurich for a day trip.
Vaduz is a tiny city located in Liechtenstein which is sandwiched between Switzerland, Germany and Austria. It wasn’t worth spending more than a day there, but the scenery and the walk up to the castle was stunning!
Visiting Zurich with children was lovely for a couple of days and we spent most of the time walking through the city and round the lake, as the scenery was amazing, as is to be expected round Switzerland.
Before we became parents, we experienced Geneva and were eager to come back and explore more of Switzerland, So decided on Zurich. We decided to stay at the Hilton Zurich airport. https://booking.tp.st/Ry0xs6d8 This was due to the times of our flights and how easy it was to reach the centre of Zurich, it was easier than travel with all our luggage/travel cot etc in to the city centre. We used booking.commhave a look at the accommodation available for your stay in Zurich.
Using the train to travel around the city and to and from the airport, was clean, efficient and extremely reliable. It was also very affordable with day passes available or free travel when purchasing the Zurich card. This gives you access to travel, museums and many more activities.
To travel to Vaduz, there is a direct train from Zurich HB to Sargans train station (the main station) and it was the most scenic train journey we have ever taken. The trains have designated carriages for little ones, where the tables have board games built into them and TVs showing kids tv/cartoons. You don’t have to worry about your little ones being loud or moving around too much, so it can make the experience little bit less stressful for you whilst travelling with kids.
We booked our train travel through trainline https://tp.st/D3isZNhA this was really straightforward to do and helped us knowing we had booked in advance, especially whilst travelling with a toddler.
After arriving at Sargans, it was a short bus trip into Vaduz centre. It’s a small little centre but absolute beautiful to walk around with the top sight being the Vaduz castle which is home to the prince of Lichtenstein.
You’re are not allowed in the castle, but the walk alone is worth it as the views are spectacular. It was slightly hilly on the way up, but we had no trouble at all getting the pram up and down.
Vaduz is a very small centre but the main street was lovely, with lots of outdoor dining options of restaurants and little cafes. We got some food here and had a drink, then carried on to the cathedral. One day was enough time here but it was a day very well spent and I would highly recommend a trip here.
We got the train to Zurich, back from Vaduz, and spent the evening in the centre. It is worth taking a walk across the Muhlsteg bridge where people have attached padlocks to the rails of the bridge, it’s quite an impressive sight. The next day we had a full day of sightseeing starting with the main square Sechseläutenplatz, a very large and spacious square giving kids plenty of room to stretch their legs.
There was loads of seating and It’s located very close to the opera house and also lake Zurich. This was our next stop and also absolutely our favourite bit of Zurich, the lake is stunning. We walked for a while round the lake which was full of boats that made for brilliant photos. There are several bars dotted around the lake so having a drink and letting kids have a play is a good way to spend a few hours.
The Zurichhorn complex, which features bars/restaurants and a huge open space with a fantastic playground for kids, is a brilliant place to spend some time. There were so many families just hanging out or playing ball games. It was a really brilliant place for Teddy to let off some steam and a great place when visiting Zurich with children.
The Arboretum Zürich which is situated just across the lake, is a cool park for children. It was also located very close to the FIFA world football museum. A great place to visit if travelling with any football fans in your party.
We had a great time visiting Zurich with Teddy. It is a very safe and attractive city with its many bridges crossing the rivers leading into lake Zurich and some lovely paths winding round the lake with plenty of open spaces for kids to relax and burn some energy.
Vaduz was also a fantastic city, well worth a day trip visit. These two cities may not be the most obvious places to travel with a family, but I would absolutely recommend doing it as there are so many sights for kids to enjoy.
With the locations being so close to the Alps they truly makes for some spectacular scenery. This combined with the fact that the locals are so welcoming and friendly towards children makes it a great place for a short family holiday.
