Gibraltar is a tiny British overseas territory which is located at the very very top of southern Spain so you are close to Northern Africa. If you’re lucky you can get a glimpse of it if the weather is on your side. The main attractions are the Rock of Gibraltar, the harbour and the old town.

One point unique to Gibraltar being such a small place is you can walk from the airport to your hotel, which is brilliant with a baby as there’s no waiting around for public transport or the added hassle of taking your baby/child on public transport.

We stayed in Westone Luxury self-catered apartments, as we wanted an apartment due to Teddy only being 4 months old so he needed bottles making up/sterilising, so we decided it would be easier than a hotel. It was a lovely apartment with a huge balcony which was great for relaxing on whilst teddy was having a nap. We had a nice living room with a pull-out bed which we used as a sofa. There was plenty of space and the kitchen area was extremely clean. There was a swimming pool, but we didn’t use it due as this was more suitable for older children rather than babies. https://booking.tp.st/Qg2lPTTT click here to view your accommodation options whilst in Gibraltar.

Our first day was spent exploring the harbour which gave a nice breeze as in October the weather was still lovely and warm at around 25 degrees Celsius.

The marina area is beautifully lit in the evening, with a great choice of restaurants to eat from. We ate at Las Iguanas which had wonderful outdoor seating with heaters. (It can get cold at night.) We returned there for dinner the next day as it was such a lovely place to relax.

The following day we headed up the Rock of Gibraltar, the most famous attraction in Gibraltar itself.

The admission to the Nature Reserve covers the cable car cost and the attractions on the rock. We took the cable car up with Teddy happily in his pram. The Barbary monkeys honestly did terrify us slightly as they were congregated around the top of the cable car stop and we had numerous people warning us to be careful with Teddy, but they did in fairness not bother us as we walked through the trails but we were slightly nervous having a baby with us.

The Sky Walk produced some spectacular views across the bay and then we headed into St Michaels Cave. This was the absolute highlight of our trip and a welcome break from the heat. The lights through the cave were stunning and were a perfect sensory experience for a young child. We sat down gave him a bottle and let him have some quiet time watching the amazing colours change continuously. I lay him across a couple of seats and he lay staring up happy as anything!

There are many more activities up the rock such as the world war 2 tunnels and exhibitions which older children may enjoy. We personally didn’t try them with Teddy as we didn’t think he would benefit from walking around them but also felt we might struggle with the pram for access. Not all the rock is pram friendly as some of the nature trails have many steps and aren’t particularly accessible but for older children, they would probably have a great time exploring.

We headed back for a shower and then headed to Casemets Square and the old town. This wasn’t the most child-friendly place as it was quite an enclosed space with mostly bars and restaurants and not a whole lot for older children to do, but it was lovely to sit out and have a drink in the sun while he napped in his pram.

We spend the rest of the time just walking around the city itself and it was a perfect holiday with Teddy being so young. It would be harder with a toddler/older child as there aren’t masses of open spaces or beaches. For a short break though, especially with the option of going up to the top of the Rock, it can be a lot of fun for kids.

It was a great first family holiday and a very small and easy city to get around with no problems taking a pram everywhere with us. Some hotels are less pram friendly as they can be somewhat further up towards the rock area so it can get pretty steep climb but for us, we had no problems at all and the harbour area was beautiful at night to relax whilst Teddy slept!
